For some men, making friends and connecting with others comes naturally.
For others, it can feel overwhelming.
Maybe you struggle to start conversations or aren't quite sure what to say. Maybe you find social situations uncomfortable, have difficulty reading social cues, or worry about saying the wrong thing. Perhaps you've always wanted meaningful friendships but haven't quite figured out how to build or maintain them.
And sometimes, after enough uncomfortable experiences, it can feel easier to avoid social situations altogether.
If any of this sounds familiar, we want you to know something important:
You are not alone. And social confidence is something you can develop, one step at a time.
At Stick & Stone Counselling Services, we believe that everyone deserves friendship, connection, and a community where they feel accepted for who they are.
That's why we're excited to introduce Common Grounds, a welcoming, professionally facilitated therapeutic program designed to help men strengthen their social skills, develop confidence, navigate relationships, and build meaningful connections with others.
Through a combination of therapeutic guidance, practical skill-building, engaging activities, and opportunities to practise social interactions in a supportive environment, Common Grounds helps participants develop the tools and confidence to connect more comfortably with the people around them.
No judgment. No pressure to be someone you're not. Just a supportive place to learn, grow, and connect.
A Different Kind of Group Therapy
We understand that the idea of joining a group can feel intimidating, especially when social interactions are already something you find challenging.
That's exactly why Common Grounds was created.
This isn't a group where you're expected to walk into a room full of strangers and immediately know how to connect.
It's a place where we help you learn how.
Common Grounds combines the supportive environment of group therapy with practical, real-life opportunities to develop and strengthen social skills.
Participants will receive guidance, encouragement, and opportunities to practise important interpersonal skills through structured activities, facilitated conversations, collaborative experiences, and therapeutic discussions.
Our approach focuses on meeting each participant where they are, recognizing individual strengths, and helping them build confidence at a pace that feels manageable.
Whether you're naturally quiet, experience social anxiety, find conversations difficult, or simply struggle to form lasting friendships, Common Grounds offers a place to develop new skills without fear of embarrassment or judgment.
You don't have to be good at socializing to join. That's what we're here to help you with.
What Will We Work On?
Common Grounds is designed to support the development of practical social and relationship skills that participants can use in their everyday lives.
💚 Building Social Confidence
Learn how to feel more comfortable in social situations, manage nervousness, and develop the confidence to engage with others.
We'll explore ways to approach unfamiliar situations, reduce self-consciousness, and build confidence through positive, supported experiences.
🤝 Starting & Maintaining Conversations
Not sure how to start a conversation or keep one going?
We'll practise important conversational skills, including initiating interactions, asking questions, finding shared interests, active listening, and knowing how to contribute to conversations naturally.
💬 Understanding Social Cues & Communication
Social interactions involve more than words.
Participants will explore verbal and nonverbal communication, including facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, personal boundaries, and recognizing how others communicate.
We'll focus on developing awareness and understanding while respecting that everyone has their own communication style.
🌿 Navigating Social Anxiety & Uncomfortable Situations
For some men, the fear of embarrassment, rejection, or being misunderstood can make social situations particularly difficult.
Through therapeutic support and practical coping strategies, participants will learn ways to manage uncomfortable feelings, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and approach social experiences with greater confidence.
☕ Developing & Maintaining Friendships
Making an initial connection is one thing. Turning that connection into a meaningful friendship can be another challenge entirely.
We'll explore how friendships develop, ways to maintain relationships, how to show interest and support, and how to navigate the natural ups and downs of interpersonal connections.
💚 Emotional Awareness & Healthy Relationships
Understanding our own emotions and recognizing the experiences of others can help us build stronger relationships.
Participants will explore emotional awareness, expressing thoughts and feelings, managing frustration, communicating needs, and developing healthy interpersonal boundaries.
🤝 Practising Skills in Real-Life Situations
Learning social skills is important, but having opportunities to practise them is where confidence can begin to grow.
Through interactive activities, small-group exercises, facilitated discussions, and shared experiences, participants can apply new skills in a supportive setting.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's progress, confidence, and discovering that meaningful connection is possible.
Who Is Common Grounds For?
Common Grounds is designed for men who experience challenges with social communication, confidence, friendships, or interpersonal relationships.
This group may be particularly helpful for men who:
Struggle to initiate or maintain conversations.
Experience social anxiety, shyness, or discomfort in group settings.
Have difficulty making friends or maintaining meaningful relationships.
Find it challenging to interpret social cues or navigate social expectations.
Feel isolated, lonely, or disconnected from others.
Struggle with communication, expressing emotions, or interpersonal boundaries.
Want to strengthen social skills in a structured, supportive environment.
Would benefit from guided opportunities to practise social interactions.
Have experienced rejection, bullying, or negative social experiences that have affected their confidence.
Simply want to feel more comfortable connecting with others.
We recognize that social challenges can arise for many different reasons, including anxiety, past experiences, neuro-developmental differences, or limited opportunities to develop and practise social skills.
Our goal is not to change who you are, but to help you develop skills and strategies that support your individual goals while respecting your personality, strengths, and communication preferences.
You don't need to fit a particular mould to belong here.
Our Approach: Progress, Not Perfection
At Stick & Stone Counselling Services, we believe that every person deserves to feel respected, valued, and supported.
We also recognize that there is no single right way to communicate, socialize, or build relationships.
Some people are naturally outgoing. Others are quiet and reflective. Some communicate differently, need more time to process social information, or feel more comfortable in smaller groups.
These differences are not shortcomings.
Common Grounds is designed to help participants develop practical skills while respecting their individuality.
We focus on building confidence, strengthening understanding, supporting emotional well-being, and helping participants create the kinds of relationships that feel meaningful to them.
Our goal isn't to make everyone more outgoing.
It's to help every participant feel more capable, comfortable, and confident being themselves while connecting with others.
