Big Feelings. Little Worries. Growing Confidence.
Join us for a 10-Week Emotional Regulation, Social Skills & Executive Functioning Program designed for Children Ages 5–10.
Growing up comes with a lot of big feelings, little worries, new friendships, and everyday challenges. For children, learning how to understand and navigate these experiences isn't always easy.
Sometimes, big emotions show up as frustration, tears, anger, worry, or feeling overwhelmed. Other times, children may struggle to make friends, express their needs, stay focused, manage transitions, or navigate the expectations of school and everyday life.
And as parents, it can be difficult to know how to help.
At Stick & Stone Counselling Services, we believe children aren't expected to have everything figured out. They're learning, growing, and discovering who they are, and sometimes they just need a little extra guidance along the way.
That's why we're excited to introduce Managing Emotions, an engaging, interactive 10-week children's skills program designed to help children understand their emotions, develop healthy coping strategies, strengthen friendships, and build the confidence and practical skills they need to thrive.
Inspired by the colourful world of Disney Pixar's Inside Out, this program helps children discover that every emotion has a purpose, every feeling deserves to be understood, and even the biggest emotions can become easier to navigate with the right tools and support.
Through creativity, play, connection, and hands-on learning, we're making emotional development something children can explore, understand, and enjoy!
Helping Little Hearts Navigate Big Feelings
Children experience the world in wonderfully different ways.
Some children feel everything deeply. Others find it difficult to explain what they're feeling. Some become overwhelmed by changes in routine, social situations, or expectations, while others struggle with attention, organization, frustration, or making meaningful connections with their peers.
These experiences are part of growing and learning, but that doesn't mean children or their families have to navigate them alone.
Our Managing Emotions program creates a warm, welcoming, and encouraging environment where children can explore their feelings, discover their strengths, practice new skills, and build meaningful connections with others.
Facilitated by two Registered Social Workers, the program combines professional guidance with engaging, developmentally appropriate activities that encourage emotional awareness, confidence, and meaningful growth.
Our goal isn't to teach children to stop feeling big emotions. It's to help them understand those emotions and learn what to do when they show up.
We want every child to leave feeling a little more confident, a little more capable, and a lot more understood.
What Will Your Child Learn?
Over ten weeks, children will explore five important areas of emotional, social, and everyday development through engaging, age-appropriate activities.
🌈 Understanding Emotions — Every Feeling Has a Purpose
Happy, sad, angry, worried, excited, frustrated, or overwhelmed — emotions are a natural and important part of being human!
Children will learn to recognize different emotions, understand how feelings affect their thoughts and behaviours, and develop the language to express what they're experiencing.
Through storytelling, creative activities, games, and group conversations, children will discover that there are no "bad" emotions and that every feeling can teach us something about ourselves.
💚 Emotional Regulation & Healthy Coping Skills
Big emotions can sometimes feel bigger than little bodies know how to handle.
We'll help children explore practical, age-appropriate strategies for navigating frustration, anxiety, disappointment, stress, and emotional overwhelm.
Children will practice calming techniques, recognizing their body's signals, asking for help, and discovering healthy ways to respond when emotions become difficult.
Our focus is on helping children develop tools they can begin using at home, at school, and in everyday situations.
🤝 Friendships, Communication & Social Skills
Friendships are an important part of childhood, but navigating social situations can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming.
Through interactive games, role-playing, and group activities, children will practice making and maintaining friendships, communicating their needs, recognizing social cues, respecting boundaries, and working through disagreements.
We'll explore kindness, empathy, teamwork, and what it means to be a good friend while also learning how to advocate for ourselves.
Because feeling connected and accepted can make a world of difference in a child's confidence and sense of belonging.
🧠 Executive Functioning — Building Skills for Everyday Success
Remembering instructions, staying organized, managing time, transitioning between activities, and completing tasks can be challenging for growing minds.
Our program introduces practical executive functioning strategies to help children strengthen attention, planning, organization, flexible thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Through fun, hands-on activities, children will practice breaking tasks into manageable steps, navigating changes, developing routines, and building greater independence.
These are valuable skills that can support children both inside and outside the classroom.
✨ Confidence, Resilience & Celebrating Strengths
Every child has unique strengths, abilities, and something wonderful to offer the world.
Throughout the program, we'll encourage children to recognize their strengths, develop a positive sense of self, approach challenges with greater confidence, and understand that making mistakes is a natural part of learning.
Children will explore perseverance, self-acceptance, positive self-talk, and how to ask for support when they need it.
We want children to understand that they don't have to be perfect to be capable, worthy, and wonderfully themselves.
Learning Through Play, Creativity & Connection
We know children learn best when they feel safe, engaged, and connected.
That's why Managing Emotions is designed to be anything but a traditional classroom experience!
Each session will incorporate a variety of interactive learning opportunities, including:
Creative activities, storytelling, and emotional exploration
Games that encourage cooperation and problem-solving
Role-playing and real-life social situations
Hands-on emotional regulation and coping activities
Executive functioning challenges and skill-building exercises
Group discussions, friendship-building, and opportunities to connect
Our activities will be adapted to each age group, ensuring children are learning in ways that are meaningful, engaging, and appropriate for their stage of development.
Most importantly, we want children to have fun, make connections, and feel proud of what they're learning!
Supporting Parents Along the Way
We believe that supporting a child's emotional development is a journey best shared together.
While children will be learning and practicing new skills during their weekly sessions, we also want parents and caregivers to feel informed, encouraged, and equipped to support that growth at home.
Throughout the program, families will receive:
Weekly Program Updates: Learn what your child has been exploring and practicing.
Practical Parenting Strategies: Helpful ideas for supporting emotional regulation, communication, and everyday challenges.
At-Home Activities: Simple opportunities to reinforce new skills through everyday routines, conversations, and play.
Encouragement & Resources: Tools to help your family continue building on what your child is learning.
Our hope is to create consistency between the skills children learn in our program and the support they receive in their everyday lives.
Because when children and their caregivers have tools they can use together, meaningful growth can continue long after each session ends.
