Being a mom of a special needs child can take a toll on your mental health. Did you know the stress hormone Cortisol levels in mothers of autistic children can mirror those of combat veterans? Constantly being in a state of fight or flight is exhausting. You put so much of yourself into caring for your child, but who is caring for you? Many warrior moms struggle with anxiety, grief, and isolation – but you don't have to carry it alone.
Research shows that the level of Cortisol in mothers of autistic children is not only elevated but mirrors the chronic stress faced by combat veterans. A 2009 study revealed that mothers of children with autism had similar cortisol levels to those experiencing chronic stress, including combat soldiers and Holocaust survivors (Autism Dev Disord, 2011). Additionally, a 1994-1995 study highlighted the positive impact that parent support networks can have, significantly reducing stress and improving coping skills (McMaster University, n.d.).
This year, we invite you to join our Mom’s Support Group, a place to connect with other mothers walking a similar path.
